ELIZABETH MITCHELL, Mezzo-Soprano, is a versatile performer whose repertoire ranges from opera to oratorio to cabaret to art song.

A native of Salt Lake City, Elizabeth is at home on the stage. Nationally, she has performed with companies including Ohio Light Opera, Detroit Opera, Opera Western Reserve, Utah Opera, Arbor Opera Theater, Opera MODO, and made her Toledo Opera debut in 2024 as Emma Goldman in Ragtime. In 2014, Ms. Mitchell made her international debut as the Witch and Mother in Humperdinck's Hänsel und Gretel with Oper im Park in St. Anton am Arlberg, Austria. More recently, she won a 2021-2022 Wilde Award for Best Leading Actress in a Play for her portrayal of Jenny in Jenny’s House of Joy at the Dio Theater and was nominated as Best Support Actress in a Musical in the 2019 Broadway World Detroit Regional Awards for Marmee in Little Women with One Off Productions. Favorite roles include Suzuki in Madama Butterfly, Dorabella in Così fan tutte, Mrs. Grose in The Turn of the Screw, Public Opinion in Orpheus in the Underworld, Ruth in The Pirates of Penzance, and Mistress Page in Nicolai’s The Merry Wives of Windsor.

Elizabeth is equally at home on the concert stage and has performed as a soloist with the Michigan Philharmonic, Orchestra Sono, The Toledo Choral Society, Monroe County Community College's Symphonic Band, and the Dodworth Saxhorn Band. In 2022, Elizabeth was honored to be the alto soloist for the world premiere of The Great Lakes Cantata by American composer Gwyneth Walker and returned in 2023 as a soloist in Considering Matthew Shepard by Craig Hella Johnson and Handel's Messiah in 2023 and upcoming in 2024.

 

Elizabeth has also found success as a stage and music director. Her debut production of Mary Poppins with Tecumseh Youth Theatre earned multiple nominations in the 2019 Broadway World Awards including Best Production for Young Adults. She returned to TYT and successfully, and safely, directed Beauty and the Beast in 2021 and Newsies in 2023. In December of 2021, Elizabeth directed HMS Pinafore with the University of Michigan Gilbert and Sullivan Society to great acclaim. She made her debut as Music Director with Concordia University's production of Bye Bye Birdie in April 2023, music directed Shakespeare in Love in October 2023 and Big Fish in March 2024. In August, she took music direction into a new avenue becoming Director of Music at First United Methodist Church in Northville, MI.

Ms. Mitchell received her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Utah and her Master of Music degree at the University of Michigan, both in Vocal Performance and with scholarship. Elizabeth loves teaching and is Adjunct Music Faculty at Concordia University Ann Arbor in addition to her private studio.

Elizabeth has competed in national and international competitions. In 2011, she was honored to be selected as a Utah District Finalist at the Metropolitan Opera Competition. Other awards include being an international finalist at the Lotte Lenya Competition for Singers in 2007 and a semi-finalist at the International Czech and Slovak Competition in both 2007 and 2009.
