Join us as we plan for our Centennial Anniversary Season

Our 2019-2020 Vision

The Toledo Choral Society has big plans for our 2019-2020 Concert Season! The season will begin with the airing of our WGTE-produced Toledo Stories, include an annual performance of G. F. Handel's Messiah and culminate with a performance of our commissioned piece, The Great Lakes Cantata, seven stirring movements for chorus and orchestra by American composer Gwyneth Walker.

The Toledo Choral Society welcomes Gwyneth Walker

The Toledo Choral Society is proud to host composer Gwyneth Walker for our Centennial Anniversary Celebration. We enjoy performing her works, which has included selections from The Friendly Beasts and Other Christmas Carols, To an Isle in the Water, If Ever Two were OneBeside the Still Waters, and How Can I Keep from Singing? The Choral Society looks forward to showcasing her gift with the performance of our commissioned work in June 2020.

American Composer Gwyneth Walker

Widely performed throughout the country, the music of American composer Gwyneth Walker is beloved by performers and audiences alike for its energy, beauty, reverence, drama, and humor. Dr. Gwyneth Walker (b. 1947) is a graduate of Brown University and the Hartt School of Music. She holds B.A., M.M. and D.M.A. degrees in Music Composition. A former faculty member of the Oberlin College Conservatory, she resigned from academic employment in 1982 in order to pursue a career as a full-time composer. For nearly 30 years, she lived on a dairy farm in Braintree, Vermont. She now divides her time between her childhood hometown of New Canaan, Connecticut and the musical communities of Sarasota, Florida and Randolph, Vermont.

Gwyneth Walker has been a proud resident of Vermont for many years. She is the recipient of the Year 2000 "Lifetime Achievement Award" from the Vermont Arts Council as well as the 2008 "Athenaeum Award for Achievement in the Arts and Humanities" from the St. Johnsbury (VT) Athenaeum. In 2012, she was elected as a Fellow of the Vermont Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Walker's catalog includes over 300 commissioned works for orchestra, chamber ensembles, chorus, and solo voice. A special interest has been dramatic works that combine music with readings, acting, and movement. The music of Gwyneth Walker is published by E.C. Schirmer (choral/vocal music) and Lauren Keiser Music(orchestral/instrumental music).

How can I get involved?

Performing Beautiful Choral Music Since 1919

The Toledo Choral Society (TCS):

  • Was established in 1919 by Mary Willing, who served as its conductor for 35 years.

  • Grew to prominence under the direction of conductor Samuel P. Szor, Director Emeritus.  This award-winning conductor, instrumentalist and educator – known throughout the region as “Mr. Music” - led TCS for 54 years, leaving a legacy of musical excellence and inclusion.

  • Performs a minimum of four concerts a year for the Toledo area.

  • Is known for their annual performance of Handel’s Messiah which has been performed every year since 1919.

  • Has nearly 100 members who come from all over the Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan region. Their bond is a love for performing outstanding choral works.

  • Membership is diverse in ethnic and cultural heritage, religious backgrounds, age and occupations.

Why TCS Matters

  • The joy and energy of choral music has the power to inspire and enrich the lives of performers and listeners alike.

  • The performance of significant choral music contributes to the cultural development of Toledo and the region.

  • The organization has withstood the test of time; it's the area’s oldest continuously performing musical organization.

  • Richard Napierala II, TCS's conductor and music director since 2012, is recognized as one the region's most prolific and successful choral and band leaders.

  • The arts – in particular music and the visual arts - are proven to:

  • Improve academic performance and behavior in school-age youth.

  • Spark economic prosperity and neighborhood revitalization.

  • Enhance ethnic, cultural and age diversity.

  • Promote cognitive and psychological well being.

  • TCS encourages its audience to bring canned goods and other non-perishable items to performances in support of local food pantries

  • Collaborations with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, the University of Findlay Concert Chorale, and the Alma Drum and Dance Experience – among others - allow traditional and nontraditional audiences to experience the beauty and excitement of contemporary choral music.

  • The Samuel P. Szor Scholarship enables an emerging area conductor/performer to serve as assistant director for TCS for one year.

What People Say About TCS

Fran and I are fans of the Toledo Choral Society who will soon be celebrating 100 years of service in our community.  We recently had the pleasure of hearing this talented group perform with Toledo Symphony in a beautiful Christmas program at St. Joan of Arc Church.  We are so fortunate to have such a presence adding to the rich arts climate that we all enjoy here in Northwest Ohio.  To help commemorate this centennial celebration, a 30-minute Toledo Story will be produced and aired on WGTE.  A fundraising campaign has been launched to support this and we urge everyone to participate as a way to say thanks for the past 100 years and to launch Toledo Choral Society into their  next century of bringing beauty into the lives of so many in our community.

I was privileged for many years to be the accompanist to the Toledo Choral Society.  This not only made it possible for me to delve deeply into great choral works, but to associate with so many wonderful, like-minded people making awesome music together.  What joy it was!

Margaret A. Weber

I have been a part of the Toledo Choral Society because I love singing and learning great choral works.  I can't imagine not having an organization like this that allows so many people with a love of singing to pursue their passion together.  It's a win for the members, and the community also, because of the wonderful concerts that are presented.  In addition to the music, I have made many friends and met many lovely people in this group over the years.

The 100th Anniversary Celebration

  • To celebrate its 100th birthday in 2019, TCS is planning a unique choral event to be held at the Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle on June 14 2020.

  • The celebration will feature an evening of original compositions created by American composer Gwyneth Walker, The Great Lakes Cantata, a 30-minute work for chorus and orchestra, consisting of seven movements to commemorate the Great Lakes, inspired by poetry and the imagery it evokes.

  • A following budget has been identified to support the 2020 events:

                        Item                                                                             Cost

WGTE fee for “Toledo Stories” (TCS bio)                                $36,000

      Original composition costs                                                         $20,000

      Orchestra fees                                                                               $10,000

      Promotion, advertising, post-concert reception                       $4,000

Reaching Out to An Appreciative Audience

  • An all-volunteer organization with only two part-time employees, TCS relies on the generosity of the community it entertains and inspires.

  • Ticket sales (Spring concert only) and goodwill offerings comprise only 38% of TCS's $37,000 revenue budget, and raising prices would exclude many audiences.
